I sure do appreciate a slow cooker, don’t you? Just add your ingredients, set it, and come back later to a meal ready for the family!

I have two slow cookers, one large and one small, that I use all year round but when fall weather starts to appear, they get used even more than ever. I cook all kinds of things in my slow cookers. If it can be cooked low and slow, it usually goes in a slow cooker.

Cooler weather ushers in the season of soups, stews, and other recipes that benefit from the long, slow cooking provided in a slow cooker. They’re definitely one of the kitchen appliances that I wouldn’t want to do without.

I came up with this delicious family-friendly recipe for Slow Cooker Cheesy Potatoes and Ham a while back. This one is guaranteed to be a hit with everyone at the table. I’ve even included a great use for the leftovers, too, at the end of this post.

How to Make Slow Cooker Cheesy Potatoes and Ham

A package of red potato wedges.

If I had to pick a side dish that I like best, it would probably be potatoes in some form or other. They’re just so versatile! And when I’m in a hurry, I have no problem taking some help from pre-packaged, pre-prepped potatoes. They’re a really good product and one that I use often.

Layered potatoes, mushrooms, and ham in slow cooker.

Layer half the potatoes, mushrooms, and ham in slow cooker. Then add a second layer of potatoes, mushrooms, and ham.

Soup mixture in a mixing bowl.

In a large bowl, combine all the remaining ingredients. Stir until combined.

Soup mixture poured over layered ingredients in a slow cooker.

Then pour the mixture over the layered ingredients in your slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 2 1/2 hours or until the potatoes are tender. After 2 1/2 hours, turn the cooker to low and continue cooking for 1 additional hour. Makes 8-10 servings.

Leftovers from the recipe with a fried egg on top.

This recipe makes an awful lot for just the two of us. There are always leftovers and one of our favorite ways to enjoy them is reheated with an over-easy egg on top for breakfast! Enjoy!

  1. I’m just really getting into utilizing the crockpot I’ve owned for a while. I LOVE CROCKPOTTING! Makes life so much simplier. Haven’t tried out a dessert in it yet, so I think peach cobbler is next on my list.

I would be thrilled to have a crockpot made in 2015. I am a retired senior living alone and don’t like to eat leftovers. My crockpot with non-remove able pot is about 25 years old, and it will not die. I like to make chile, soups, stews and beans in my pot then bag them in one serving size. I will lay them out flat on a cookie sheet and freeze them flat. Make storage really easy in the freezer.

  4. Emily Smith says:

I would love to make stew or chili.

  13. Colleen (Souffle Bombay) says:

Mmm, those potatoes look scrumptious…love them when they are falling apart! I have no experience with a slow cooker. I don’t have one and neither did my mom, or either grandmom. Kinda interesting to me how popular they are yet we’ve never ventured there.

  14. Amanda @ The Kitcheneer says:

I am thinking a beef stew! or a hot crab dip!

  15. Kathy Flowers says:

With my niece’s wedding coming up and me being designated “Food Wrangler” for the reception foods (Heavy hors d’oeuvres), I can see MULTIPLE uses for a new crockpot — sweet & sour meatballs, bbq mini sausages, queso, etc., not to mention trying these fab looking potatoes!

This looks so good, like some serious comfort food. My two oldest kids are potato fanatics, and I know we’d devour this. This is the second time this week I’ve seen potatoes made in a slow cooker – I have never done that! If I won, I’d make some sort of potato dish in my new slow cooker first.

  23. I love pinto beans slow cooked in the crockpot

  24. I WOULD MAKE MY GRANDMA’S SOUP.

  25. Cookin Canuck says:

This reminds me of a slow cooker dish that my mother-in-law has made ever since I’ve known her, and it’s been a favorite of my husband’s since he was a kid. A great comfort meal, for sure!

  26. Favorite slow cooker meal — diced ham (usually left-over), green beans, and chunked potatoes. Jane’s right — you can’t salt the meal until you check to see how much salt the ham has already added, especially if it’s a Smithfield ham.

  27. Posole–my best friend’s family makes it, and I need her recipe!

  28. Lauren Kelly Nutrition says:

  38. I will make Slow Cooker Chicken Fajitas .

  39. Jane Herring says:

I just put salisbury steak in my crockpot, but my favorite thing I make is lima beans and ham. My brother-in-law thinks I’m a wonderful cook because he loves this so much. Can’t convince him it’s the easiest thing I do. I use dried lima beans, not soaked, leftover picnic ham and water to cover. That’s it – no salt because you never know how salty the ham is.

  40. Maryann Stewart says:

With a fancy slow cooker like that I would be using all the time. My husband has requested Pork Chops over Cheesey Potatoes. That would be the first dinner.

  41. Ham and potatoes is a classic combination and one of my favorite dinners!

  42. First I would have to try the cheesy potatoes and ham then maybe a roast. Oh, and some applesauce with cinnamon would fill the house with lovely fall scents.
