- Chex Cereal – Any kind of Chex can be used for this recipe. My favorite just happens to be Chex rice cereal. Use your own favorite!
- Bugles – This is a crunchy, toasty corn chip. I recommend buying the original Bugles for this recipe.
- Pretzels – Use either pretzel twists or sticks without extra flavorings (i.e., no onion or garlic flavoring).
- Reese’s Pieces – One of my favorite candies ever! And they’re the perfect color for a Halloween recipe.
- Candy Corn – I love classic candy corn and look forward to it coming back to stores every fall. Brach’s is the original and best.
- Candy Pumpkins – The same texture and flavor as candy corn, just in a different shape.
- Mint M&Ms – Brings a fun, ghoulish green color to the mix.
- Candy Eyeballs – Can usually be found with the cake decorating supplies at your local grocery store. Or find candy eyes on Amazon.
- Butter – Use either salted or unsalted. It doesn’t matter much for this recipe.
- Brown Sugar – Creates the caramel flavor in the mixture.
- Vanilla Extract – Brings out the caramel notes in the butter-sugar mixture.

🥄 How to Make Halloween Party Mix
- Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. Line a large cookie sheet or baking tray with parchment paper or foil and spray lightly with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, combine the Bugles, pretzels, and cereal. Set aside.
- In a second, smaller bowl, mix together the warm melted butter, brown sugar, and vanilla. Stir until thoroughly combined but still runny.
- Pour the sugar and butter mixture slowly over the cereal mixture stirring constantly until all ingredients are well coated.
- Spread the mixture evenly over the surface of the prepared cookie sheet. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes or until fragrant and bubbly. Stir halfway through the cooking time.
- Remove the pan from the oven and allow the caramel-coated cereal mixture to cool completely.
- Pour into an extra large serving bowl. Add the candies. Mix well, serve, and enjoy!

💡 Tips
- Add more or less of the ingredients to create the perfect combination for your tastes. This snack is customizable to your liking! For a salty snack mix, add more pretzels and Bugles. Or add more sweet treats like Reese’s pieces and candy corn for a sweeter flavor profile.
- Be careful not to overmix the sugar mixture or it will cool and become too thick to pour over the cereal. You want it to still be warm and runny. If it starts to cool and isn’t pourable, rewarm it in the microwave in 10-second intervals until it’s warm and runny again. If the sugar mixture has a runny consistency as it rolls off the spatula, then it’s ready to pour!
- Make sure that the baked cereal mix cools completely before adding the candy, or the candies will melt.

❓ FAQs
This recipe is meant for a once-a-year celebratory treat, so it wasn’t created with health in mind. However, you can make it healthier by subbing in whole grain cereal and naturally sweetened treat options. The sugar-butter mixture may also be skipped and ingredients like nuts and dried fruit can replace the candy.
Skip the stovetop caramel glaze and omit the candy. The candy could be replaced with salty snacks like nuts, popcorn, or potato chips. You could also add some of your favorite savory spices mixed with melted butter instead of brown sugar.
Work quickly when coating the cereal mixture in the caramel glaze so that no single piece of cereal absorbs too much of the sugar and butter. You can also bake the mix for a little longer.
