How to Make Red, White, and Blue Jello Parfaits
Prepare the Red Gelatin
- Heat 1 cup of water in the microwave for 2-3 minutes or until boiling. Add the red gelatin to a medium bowl and slowly add the boiling water. Stir for 2-3 minutes or until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Stir in 1 cup of cold water.
- Evenly divide the red gelatin between serving glasses. Place in refrigerator to set, at least 2 hours.
TIP: To make transferring the glasses easier, put them on a tray or in a pan before moving them to the refrigerator.
- When the gelatin is set, proceed with the recipe.
Prepare the Blue Topping Mixture
- Repeat the steps above for preparing the blue jello. Leave the gelatin mixture in the mixing bowl and place it in the refrigerator to cool (you don’t want to add warm jello to the whipped topping).
- When the blue jello is cool but not yet set, measure out 1 cup. In a large mixing bowl, place 8 ounces (1 container) of whipped topping and gently fold in the 1 cup of blue gelatin.
- Place the whipped topping and gelatin mixture in the refrigerator until completely cool and set (about 1 hour).
TIP: Store the remaining blue gelatin in the refrigerator and allow it to set. You won’t use this in the recipe but can serve it separately.
Pipe the White and Blue Toppings
- When the gelatin and topping mixture is set, transfer it to a large disposable piping bag and place the second container of plain whipped topping in another bag.
- Pipe the plain whipped topping onto the red jello followed by the blue topping mixture and an additional dollop of plain whipped topping if desired (see photos).
Storage
These parfaits are best served the same day they’re assembled. Store them lightly covered on a tray in the refrigerator for up to six hours before serving. Add the sprinkles at the last moment.

Questions and Tips
The individual components (red jello and blue topping) may be made in advance. For best results, the parfaits should be assembled on the day you plan to serve.
The French word “parfait” means “perfect.” A classic parfait is a layered French dessert with a boiled custard ice cream layered between berries or fruit. In American cuisine, a parfait may refer to any dessert that is layered and served in individual serving dishes.
First, parfait is French and trifle is English. The difference is that parfaits are served in individual glasses and a trifle is assembled in one large bowl.
