I’m sure many cooks claim they have the best guacamole recipe, and I wouldn’t say that about mine unless I really believed it. This recipe is always a crowd-pleaser at picnics and on game days, so I know I’m not biased! This winning guacamole pairs with just about everything from burritos and quesadillas to Mexican soups and stews.
The secret? None of the flavors overpower the avocado. When I want Guacamole, I’m craving avocado specifically. This is Guacamole where avocado is the star and all the other ingredients revolve around it!
I hope you enjoy it as much as my loved ones and I enjoy it.
❤️ Why I Love This Recipe
- Simple and quick. It only takes 10 minutes to make this guacamole.
- Versatile. Use it in tacos or burritos, with nachos or plain tortilla chips, or even on toast!

- Avocado: Use a variety with a creamy texture for the best guacamole possible!
- Tomato: Make sure it’s vine-ripe. You can use any variety you like.
- Red onion and garlic: Two minor ingredients, but important ones, as they give your guacamole a mild “zing.”
- Coarse salt: To balance out the rest of the ingredients.
- Cilantro: This controversial herb always adds Mexican flavor to any recipe.
- Lemon juice, lime juice: As with cilantro, it’s hard to find Mexican food without one (or both) of these citrus fruits included.
- Tajin seasoning: This is a mixture of lime, sea salt, and chili peppers in most grocery stores’ Mexican food aisle.

🔪 How I Make Quick and Easy Guacamole
- Slice the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop out the flesh with a large spoon. Place the avocado flesh in a medium-sized mixing bowl and mash well with a fork.
- Mince the cilantro, dice the tomato, and dice the red onion. Add to the mixing bowl with the rest of the ingredients. Stir until well blended.
- Taste and adjust seasonings if needed.
🔀 Recipe Variations
- Add spice. Want more heat in your guacamole? Add a tablespoon of your favorite hot sauce or some diced jalapenos or chipotle peppers.
- Make it into a meaty guac dip. I’ve seen versions of guacamole with tasty mix-ins like chorizo, bacon, or ham.
- Experiment with extra seasonings. Cumin is a popular addition to guacamole, for instance.
💡 Recipe Tips
- Not a fan of cilantro? Feel free to replace it with another herb or leave it out altogether.
- If you feel that the onion flavor is too strong, rinse the chopped onion in a strainer under cold water. Rinsing will greatly temper the onion’s strength. Let it drain and dry thoroughly before adding to the recipe.
- For the creamiest texture, make sure the avocados are fresh and ripe. They should have a slight “give” when lightly pressed.
- You can use only lemon juice or lime juice if you don’t have both available. It won’t alter the flavor too much.
- Use fresh lemons and limes rather than bottled juice. You’ll notice much brighter flavors from fresh fruit.
🍚 How I Store Guacamole
Guacamole is difficult to keep fresh, but it can be done! One method for storing is to place a piece of plastic wrap against the top of the guacamole in a tightly closed container. Another way is by adding a half-inch of water to the top of the guacamole in its container. Either method will allow about two days of refrigerator storage.
🍽️ Serving Suggestions
Guacamole is one of those beautifully versatile recipes that may be used in many ways. It’s great with tacos, burritos, nachos, and tortilla chips – the standards you know and love. However, you can also use it in a burger, as a topping for Mexican beef stew or chicken salad, and even as a dip with Southern classics like Alabama fire crackers.
❓ Questions About Guacamole
I’m not a dietary expert, but this recipe should be naturally gluten-free if you follow the directions to the letter. That’s one less worry if you’re serving up a snack to a crowd!
Unfortunately, no. This is a common misconception. Placing an avocado pit in guacamole only keep the part touching the pit from turning brown because no oxygen can reach that area.
Trying to cut back on carbs? Try dipping cucumber rounds, blanched broccoli florets, or baby carrots!
